Tuamotu Archipelago

The Tuamotu constitute an archipelago of 76 atolls located northwest of the Society Islands. Meaning in Tahitian the islands off the coast, this highly dispersed island group extends over a length of 1,762 km. Its inhabitants are the Paumotus, a word that also designates their language. From Tahiti, it takes 1 hour by plane or 5 days by boat to get there. Made up of low islands that protrude from the ocean by just a few meters, the Tuamotus are bordered by a superb lagoon teeming with diverse species, making them a popular destination for divers.
